"The quiet beauty of Dunwich Forest and Dunwich Heath in Suffolk never fails to inspire me, whatever the season or weather."
During my teaching career I was fortunate to have private evening studies with London based painter Oliver Bevan from 1991-1998. This led to a succession of group exhibitions in and around London and St Ives. Since retiring in 2009 and moving to Suffolk there has been more time to develop my work, encouraged also by recent workshops with Cornish based painter Ashley Hanson. Much of the subject matter for my work comes from regular walks in the landscape - the quiet beauty of the marshes, fields and woodlands close to where I live, and the magnificent skies, especially at night, never fail to inspire.
I like to use media that allow an element of random chance, and enjoy experimenting on a range of different grounds - wood, canvas, hessian, collage and monoprint. Slowing down seems to be an important element in the making of my work too - marks, colours and textures are all given as much time as they need in order to evoke the sensation of place I'm searching for, always aiming to express imaginatively the dynamic but quiet majesty of the Suffolk landscape. Several paintings are usually on the go at the same time to prevent overworking - something I always find challenging!
Since 2009 I have exhibited in group shows at:
The Cut Arts Centre, Halesworth
The Halesworth Gallery, Halesworth
The Harry Becker Society, Wenhaston and Blythburgh
The Bell Gallery, Bungay
Holton Lodge Barn Gallery, Holton
Works are represented by Frivoli Gallery, London
and are in private collections in the UK, Malaysia, Japan, USA and Australia
